E-Prime 3

E-Prime 3

Psychology Software Tools
Comprehensive Software for Behavioral Research

E-Prime 3.0 is a widely used software suite for designing, running, and analyzing behavioral experiments. It provides full control over stimulus presentation and response collection with millisecond accuracy, making it suitable for a wide range of psychological, cognitive, and neuroscience research applications.

E-Prime allows researchers to build custom experiments using an intuitive, drag-and-drop graphical interface. All steps - experiment design, data collection, and data analysis - are handled on a single platform. With more than 100,000 users across over 60 countries, E-Prime has established itself as the most widely adopted solution for computerized experiment creation, offering access to extensive documentation, online forums, and a large peer community.

Core Components

E-Prime consists of software components for designing, running and analysing experiments. These include:

  • E-Studio: Graphical environment for experiment design using a timeline and visual interface.
  • E-Basic: Built-in scripting language for advanced customization, based on Visual Basic for Applications™.
  • E-Run: Executes experiments with precise timing and stimulus control.
  • E-DataAid: Provides tools for reviewing, filtering, and analyzing collected data.
  • E-Merge: Enables combination of data from multiple sessions or participants for group-level analysis.

Easy to use Drag & Drop Interface

Easily build experiments by dragging and dropping text, images, audio, and video elements onto a visual timeline. Get started quickly with free templates and explore over 100 ready-made experiments available in the Experiment and STEP Libraries.

Integration Capabilities

Trigger and synchronize events using Chronos, or through socket, serial, or parallel port connections. Chronos Adapters make it easy to connect with EEG, fNIRS, and other physiological systems. For wireless EEG setups, our E-Prime package file for LSL is also available on GitHub.

  • EEG Systems (e.g., BioSemi, Brain Products)
  • Eye Trackers (e.g., Tobii Pro, SR Research EyeLink)
  • Neuroimaging Systems (fMRI, NIRS)
  • Behavioral Hardware (e.g., Cedrus response boxes, external switches, custom-built I/O devices)

Advanced Scripting Capabilities

Whether you're new to scripting or an advanced user, E-Basic—E-Prime’s scripting language—offers powerful tools to customize and enhance your experiments. A wealth of tutorials and documentation is available to help you make the most of this flexible feature.

Key Features

  • Millisecond Precision Timing: Critical for behavioral research requiring accurate stimulus-response alignment.
  • Flexible Stimulus Presentation: Supports images, text, sound, and video stimuli—including multi-modal presentation.
  • Device Compatibility: Works with standard peripherals (keyboard, mouse, touchscreen) and specialized response devices.
  • Hardware Integration: Easily integrates with EEG, fMRI, NIRS, eye trackers, and other physiological systems via serial, parallel, or USB interfaces.
  • Remote Experiment Distribution: Compatible with E-Prime Go for remote data collection on participant devices.
  • Scalable Complexity: Suitable for building both simple and highly complex experimental paradigms, making it accessible for both novice and expert users.
