Research Ring

BIOPAC
Revolutionary Multi-Modal Sensor Ring Delivering Lab-grade Physiological Data

The Research Ring from BIOPAC is a compact, wearable sensor system for physiological data collection in laboratory and everyday environments. Its integrated sensors capture electrodermal activity (EDA/GSR), optical pulse, skin temperature (SKT) and movement. ECG can be recorded optionally by adding a separate lead and electrode. Record brief ECG segments when the ring’s ECG electrode touches bare skin on the opposite side of the body, with the participant seated and relaxed. For continuous ECG recordings the Research Ring requires an ECG adapter, ECG lead and a disposable electrode positioned on the opposite side of the body.

The lightweight, adjustable design supports research into autonomic activity, emotional responses, stress and human behaviour, while providing access to raw physiological signals.

Research Ring comes as a bundle and includes:

  • Research Ring main unit
  • Eight (8) interchangeable shims for ring size 6-13 US (52-70 EU)
  • Magnetic charging cable
  • Recording software - either a perpetual AcqKnowledge license or one-year Senstream Cloud license

Multi-Modal Measurements

The Research Ring allows researchers to measure a variety of different physiological metrics at the "tip of a finger". Current and upcoming sensors measure:

  • EDA (Electrodermal Activity) – Skin conductance for sympathetic arousal
  • PPG (Photoplethysmography) – Heart rate and pulse
  • ECG (Electrocardiography) - Electrical heart activity
  • Temperature – Skin surface temperature
  • Accelerometry – Movement and activity detection
  • Others in development – e.g., haptic feedback, environmental sensors

Recording and Software Integration

Data is transmitted via Bluetooth Low Energy to the Senstream app for iOS/iPadOS or to a compatible Windows computer running AcqKnowledge Research Ring Software.

The appropriate AcqKnowledge Research Ring software/licence supports real-time recording and analysis, as well as importing recordings from the Senstream cloud. Software and accessory requirements depend on the selected configuration.

Key Features

  • Lightweight, adjustable ring for laboratory and field studies
  • Integrated sensing of multiple physiological signals
  • Access to raw data with selectable signals and sampling rates
  • Wireless data transmission; continuous ECG additionally uses an electrode lead
  • Approximately 8-10 hours of battery life, depending on sampling rates
  • Magnetic USB charging connection

Applications

The Research Ring is ideal for studies in:

  • Emotion and stress research
  • Human factors and usability testing
  • VR/AR interaction studies
  • Ambulatory monitoring
  • Neuroergonomics
  • Wearable cognition and performance
  • Multimodal psychophysiological experiments

Its discreet and unobtrusive form makes it particularly suited for naturalistic and ecologically valid research, where traditional wired sensors may interfere with behavior or realism.
